Alsace was Germany until World War II. Before that, it was part of The Rhineland.

Many rulers ran the place, and there were disputes, and walls had to be built. Many of these rampart walls, double in many cases (to deal with the introduction of firearms in battle around 1500) are still standing, at least partially, and here in Obernai, you can see the lovely houses built right INTO the ramparts!

William Penn took pity on the beleaguered peoples of The Rhineland, and many of them, including some of my Anabaptist ancestors, were invited to go to what is now the USA — these people are PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH. They were asked, WHAT ARE YOU? and they replied DEUTSCH, meaning that is the language they spoke, so the Americans called them DUTCH. But they aren’t Dutch, of course.

THE FRANK LETTERS, about FULL FORCE FRANK, will be books, a feature film directed by Melvin Van Peebles (with Nick Zedd and Randy Russell as associate directors), and a documentary for public television.
