FUNERALS ARE BIG BUSINESS IN FRANCE! Obernai, Alsace 2010
April 132010
Funerals are big business in France! Very controlled. It’s a monopoly, pretty much, dominated by Pompes Funèbres Génèrales, which is kind of State-owned, if I remember correctly.
Do NOT die intestate here in France (or anywhere else, for that matter)! Your loved ones WILL be saddled with the debt — your grandchildren can inherit your bills. Personal bankruptcy really isn’t an option in France, but Alsace (which used to be Germany) has some interesting different laws and rules. Also, there is an interesting status of the Church and the State as connected, here.
I can buy beautiul French funerary objects and ship them to you anywhere in the world, insured and registered method. La Poste, the French post office, has some great pre-paid boxes, with no weight limit.
Artists: consider getting an image of your choice etched onto a marble plaque! Everyone: plan your funeral ahead. You can design your own grave well in advance here, and leave a LOT less work, doubt and thought to the bereaved you leave behind.
I got a very inexpensive, small funerary expenses plan, just a few euros per month, from AVIVA, which used to be Norwich Union. Life insurance, disability insurance, health insurance, long term care policies, annuities, estate planning — so important!
Forget about just being burned and having your ashes scattered here in France, or the simple, biodegradable pine box under an apple tree on your family’s property here. FORBIDDEN. Lots of red tape!
Obernai is worth a day’s visit. It rates two stars in the guide books. My spouse wasn’t crazy about it, but I liked it a lot. The active Jewish community were interesting, there are GREAT hotels which are HUNDREDS of years old to stay in, and the fortifications are fascinating.
