Alfred Binet was born in Nice, France on July 11, 1857. He studied law and medicine
in Paris. About 1878, Alfred saw Jean Charcot, a French Neurologist who works at
Salpetriere Hospital in Paris performing the studies of hypnosis. He inspired Binet to
trade his law career for the studies of medicine and science. Binet then obtained a
doctorate in natural science.
During this time Binet wrote La Psychologie du raisonnement (1886; The Psychology of
Reasoning), Le Magnétisme animal (1887; Animal Magnetism), and On Double
Consciousness (1889). In 1891, Binet entered the Laboratory of physiological
Psychology of the École Pratique des Hautes Études. In 1892, he became assistant
director then later on in 1895 he was director. During 1895, he discovered the journal
L’Année psychologique. At the time 1900, he became attracted in suggestibility, a normal
finish of his assignment on hysteria.
Binet’s big interest, despite, was the development of understanding. In 1899, he
well-established, a laboratory at the École de la Rue de la Grange aux Belles. He arranged
several test to study the intellectual development in his daughters Armande and
Marguerite. Binet became interested in Sir Francis Galton, an English psychologist who
was attempting to quantify individual cognitive capacity by administering standardized
tests.
Binet used Galton’s work to examine a variety of famous and brilliant personalities,
including writers, artists, mathematicians, and chess players. In 1905 he developed a test
in which he had children do tasks such as follow commands, copy patterns, name objects,
and put things in order or arrange them properly. He gave the test to Paris schoolchildren
and created a standard based on his data. The IQ is the ratio of "mental age" to
chronological age, with 100 being average.
